As the least populated but 10th largest state, Wyoming is home to abundant populations of native wildlife . 88% of surveyed Wyoming residents surveyed say wildlife are extremely/very important to Wyoming’s quality of life (2019 Wildlife Migration Public Opinion Poll). Wildlife recreation, including hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching contribute over one billion dollars to the Wyoming economy annually.

Wildlife conservation in Wyoming is primarily funded via the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, federal aid from the Pittman Robertson (PR) and Dingell Johnson (DJ) (excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment), and a few other small areas. WGFD receives no property taxes from the state of Wyoming or other recreational users. In short, the hunting and fishing community currently shoulders the majority of the burden of wildlife conservation.

Wildlife tourism benefits directly from Wyoming’s wildlife yet currently contributes very little to conservation. Wyoming’s wildlife face a slew of challenges requiring coordinated efforts to fund critical conservation projects which will ensure their future. Wildlife tourism is currently an untapped resource for this funding.
